What To Expect During Your Wedding Makeup Trial
Well, I wasn’t expecting it to be February when I wrote my first blog of the year.
However I wasn’t expecting to be up to my eyeballs in homeschooling either. So here it is, I’m rusty wheeling it through the second month of the year as promised, with what to expect during your wedding day trial.
At the end of last year I thought that this would be a helpful and hopeful blog post thinking that weddings would be back on track in 2021 but, unfortunately this is not the case. I am writing it anyway as weddings will be back with a boom at some point in the not so distance future (she says with her fingers crossed).
When
So, down to the nitty gritty. A wedding makeup trial is a super important part of your wedding day preparations. I recommend booking it for approximately 8 weeks prior to your wedding day. By this point you will have most of your wedding plans in place which can really guide the direction of your makeup. This may sound a bit weird, but for example if you are having a big formal traditional wedding, a bohemian style makeup wouldn’t really suit that would it? So by the time you see me for your makeup trial, you will have chosen your dress, the style of your wedding, the venue and have all of those things in place which can be a great guide in terms of makeup.
Skin
It is absolutely essential that at least 6 months prior to your wedding day you really look after your skin and get yourself into a good skincare routine if you’re not already. Although I will see you 8 weeks before your big day, I personally don’t think this gives enough time to turn around any significant skin issues (I am going to do a separate blog on a good skincare routine). If you do have a skin condition or problematic skin, I would always recommend seeing a Dermatologist through your GP. If you do need any guidance around a great skincare routine, I am more that happy to advise you from the moment you book me.
The reason this is so important is that no amount of makeup can mask, for example, really dehydrated, dry skin that has never been exfoliated. In fact it can make it look worse. So getting your skin into the best possible condition is so important alongside drinking plenty of water every day. You are paying for a service that you want to get the most out of, so this is your starting block. It’s also worth me saying here, the day before your trial make sure you are really well hydrated, exfoliate the night before and get plenty of hydrating products on your skin to get the best finish from my makeup application.
Trial Prep
Prior to your trial I will ask you to email me a photograph of yourself when you felt great and really happy and comfortable with the way you look. That will give me an idea of what you like, your style and colouring and I can start thinking about what would look good on you. I would also encourage you to send me any photos of makeup looks you love. It doesn’t have to be from a bridal magazine. What I would say though, think about looks that will be timeless and are not following a major trend. You don’t want to look back at your wedding album in 20 years and say to yourself “What was I thinking?” (I’m picturing 80’s makeup here, not that I’d let you do that anyway!).
By being prepared and communicating with me prior to your trial, you’re going to get the most out of hiring a professional makeup artist as I will have built up a kit and portfolio around the ideas and makeup we will have looked at.
On The Day
On the trial day itself I will travel to your home and spend around two hours with you. We will chat about your wedding day, timings, how many people want their makeup done and style. Then I will do your makeup based on what we have discussed. It’s a good idea to wear a top or have a piece of material similar to the colour of your dress so we can see how your makeup looks against it. Quite often this will be a time when tweaks and little changes are made and this is why we don’t want to be doing your wedding makeup for the first time on your wedding day. I’ll ask you tons of questions so I’m building a picture of exactly what you like and don’t like and make suggestions along the way. It is super important for you to be absolutely honest with me at this stage and if there is something you don’t like or you’re not sure of, please say as that is the whole point of the makeup trial. We want to have perfected your look come your wedding day and for you to feel excited and thrilled with your makeup when I leave on the trial day.
After Your Makeup Trial
It is a great opportunity to see how the makeup sits on your skin after the trial. There might be an area that needs an extra something or a slight change of the type of product I use somewhere. This is completely normal as there is no one size fits all and everyones skin is different. It’s much better to find out post trial than on your wedding day.
I will send you an itinerary of my wedding day timings via email so you have them in case your hairdresser or anyone else needs to know. Plus its quite nice for you to know exactly what’s happening when, as there will be a lot going on!
I hope this covers all areas but if there is anything I’ve missed or you want to know more information about something in particular please just get in touch.
I can’t wait to make you look and feel amazing on your wedding day.
Big love
Emma xx
